I was recently asked about leadership without controlling the purpose of it. How do you lead and not take control of the program, the situation, the business or what ever it may be? For me it’s a simply answer, I can’t control anyone except my own actions or reactions. That is all I can do, this goes along with Step 1 of the Big Book, the 12 Steps of Healing, the 12 Steps of Recovery. These are the steps I know and try to live daily in my life because I know how they work and the greatness that has come from following them. I was recovering from being once married to a sex addict, and I used the 12 Step program at a recovery center for couples, an ex spouse such as myself. This program saved my life and it changed my life as well.
Leadership
Leadership is described as the ability of an individual, group or organization to lead, influence, or guide other individuals, teams or organizations. Effective leaders motivate and inspire other through their actions, they build trust, set examples and empower their teams to innovate and take initiative. This is what leadership means according to Wikipedia. What does true leadership mean though?
If you are wanting to be a great leader, the first thing that should be most important is the fact you care about your organization, team, group, or business. The serving heart can be the greatest gift given by leaders, and yes it can also be the greatest weapon. Knowing your boundaries will bring you great joy than pain. Caring for the health of others is mindful, whether it’s their mental health, physical health or even spiritual health. Being a leader who wants only to obtain notoriety only and not having a heart of caring, in my opinion, will soon fail to their demise.
How do you lead and care at the same time? Can you be humble and a great leader? What is the difference? Hopefully we were called to be the leader because we care. If we have been called, it is possible because we are also humble. This is going to help us in not being that overbearing, controlling, out of hand leader.
Without Controlling
As I said previously, being humble and knowing that we can only control our own actions and reactions is the best way to lead and to impower others to do the same. In a controlled environment you are only wanting others to do what you want, say or think. To do it your way only. How is this called leadership? It isn’t, it is called dictatorship. Dictating to others what you want and not leading them to find themselves or know what they are possible of doing.
Leading others to gain their ability to accomplish the assignment on their own is great leadership, serving and humbleness of your own. A heart of a servant is to see the other succeed and go on to help others do the same. That is also considered a humble heart. They truly can work together if the leader is healthy minded, healthy spiritually and healthy hearted. Controlling the situation is a selfish way will only lead to the unhealthiness of the leader and the group, individual or company. Have a leader who will make sure that the group, individual or company makes it’s best through the other person is also a leader who is taking care of the whole situation, in control in a humble leadership way.
One example of great leadership can be a quarter back of the football team, who knows that a game can only be won by everyone doing their part and working together for the good of the team. Working together to fulfill the desire of the team is to win and then acknowledge that the team made the win happen. The acknowledgement ach individual and each person on the whole team. It wasn’t done with a controlling finger or object but done with the cooperation of everyone together. What an inspiration to all cooperates, businesses or groups.
Conclusion
Leadership without controlling is possible and as a Believer, All things are possible with God. He can equip you as He leads you into leadership. Leadership of His Children, His Church, His Gift given to you no matter what it is that He has called you to. Do it with a humble heart, giving God all Honor and Praise and letting Him guide you in knowledge and wisdom. Do it with a serving heart, just as He did the night of the Last Supper, washing the feet of the Apostles. What a great picture of leadership without controlling.
